United States: How to Apply for Medicare

Published by Averee Martinez on

If you start certain retirement benefits at age 65 or earlier, federal health coverage enrollment happens automatically, making the process much simpler.
If you delay retirement benefits to increase benefits, you must enroll yourself. Missing the window can bring late penalties, higher premiums, and delayed coverage.
Eligibility usually starts at 65, with some younger disability cases qualifying too. First enrollment runs seven months around your birthday for eligible applicants.
Before You Apply
Need: Social Security number, birth city, current insurance
Apply: online, phone, or local office
Afterward: watch for your card and check status
Extra Coverage Matters Too
Add gap, drug, or private bundled coverage as needed
Apply just before your birthday month so start dates align
